What is PageRank (PR)

Jul 15, 20109 mins read

PageRank (PR) is the name used by Google to measure the link popularity of a website. PageRank was created by Larry Page while he was studying at Stanford University and PageRank has been patented by Stanford University.

The PageRank for a website is determined based on the quantity and quality of links to that website and is a probability value on the Google ranking algorithm scale. The formula created by Google to determine PageRank is a public secret. In Google PageRank, the scale measured is from one to ten (1-10).

PageRank is what determines the ranking of a web page in the Google search engine. Search engines usually display web pages that have keywords that match the user's search.

The best way to increase your website's PageRank is to have Backlinks from other websites to your website. Each Backlink you have has a different value. Websites with higher PageRank will give higher value to your website. Moreover, websites with relevant content to yours will also provide more value through these Backlinks. Although a web page has a high PageRank value, if that page links to many other websites, the points or value for that link will be distributed.

In addition to Backlinks, Site Speed is also a factor that determines PageRank, how fast Google can access and read the website because Google will give a 'bonus' to websites that can be accessed quickly.

Indirectly, another way to increase PageRank is to have quality and useful content on your website. Having quality content will increase the chances of getting Backlinks from other websites.
